In the latest Warleague update, Critters have undergone a complete transformation, making them stronger, more adaptive, and more distinct from NPC-controlled creatures. Previously, Spiders and similar creatures were part of the Critter faction, but they lacked the tactical depth and customization needed to function as a fully playable species. As a result, they have now been classified as Primal creatures, which serve as AI-controlled threats in the game, while Critters have been enhanced into a fully realized faction with unique evolutionary mechanics.
During playtesting, we found that Spiders lacked the flexibility to offer a rewarding player experience. Their abilities were too basic, too static, and their reliance on preset attack patterns made them feel less interactive compared to the other factions. Instead of trying to force them into a playable faction, we decided to embrace their role as environmental hazards, allowing them to remain a menacing presence on the battlefield while freeing up design space for a stronger, more refined Critter faction.
Critters are no longer just a swarm of disposable creatures—they are now a faction that evolves dynamically based on battlefield conditions. Instead of relying on fixed unit types, players can now guide their Critters’ evolution in real-time, choosing how they mutate to counter their enemies.
While Critters have evolved into a strategic powerhouse, Spiders and other Primal creatures now serve as unpredictable NPC threats. They act as wild predators, striking at weak combatants and disrupting strategies, forcing players to stay alert and adapt.
These changes deepen faction identity, sharpen strategic options, and make both Critters and Primal creatures more distinct and exciting. Whether you’re leading an evolving swarm or navigating the dangers of the arena, this update brings new layers of challenge and immersion to Warleague.
